COCKRILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This 700-student, inner-city K-4 grade school is located in an economically deprived neighborhood. The owner emphasized the need to overcome sensory deprivation suffered by many students. Creation of a fun, safe, and secure atmosphere was mandatory. The building design is a simple triangle, minimizing exits and blind corridors. The enclosed courtyard at the center of the triangle serves as a safe haven for play during and after school. Structural elements were exposed and emphasized as an inexpensive way to create interest and excitement. Primary colors, along with simple geometric elements, add to the playful character of the building.
